Nvidia’s Ohio Data Center Deal: Why It Is Putting Billions Behind AI Infrastructure

Nvidia is putting serious money behind one of the biggest AI data center projects in the US, and this time the story is not just about GPUs.

The company has agreed to provide up to $105 billion in financial guarantees for a massive data center project in Pike County, Ohio, while also investing $1.5 billion in SB Energy, the SoftBank-owned company developing the facility. The site is being built for OpenAI, which has signed a 20-year lease.
The project could eventually reach 8 gigawatts of computing capacity, with the first 800 megawatts expected to come online in 2028. That makes this much more than another data center. It is part of the race to build the physical infrastructure needed for the next generation of AI.
What Is Nvidia Building in Ohio?
Nvidia is not directly building the facility. SB Energy will develop, own and operate the site, while OpenAI will be its main tenant.
The campus is planned at the former Portsmouth nuclear-related site in Pike County, Ohio. The US Department of Energy and Department of Commerce announced the broader project earlier this year as a partnership involving SoftBank, SB Energy and AEP Ohio.

Why Is Nvidia Putting So Much Money Into It?

The Ohio project is expected to be supported by 10GW of new power generation, while SoftBank and SB Energy plan to invest around $4.2 billion in regional grid infrastructure with AEP Ohio. The planned generation includes 9.2GW of natural-gas power.
