The $12.9 Billion AI Deal: Nvidia Is Taking Over Hugging Face

September 5, 2026 4 Min Read

Nvidia buys Hugging Face

Nvidia is making a massive move beyond GPUs. The company has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, bringing one of the world’s biggest open AI platforms into Nvidia’s growing technology ecosystem.

The deal, announced on September 3, 2026, is one of Nvidia’s largest acquisitions and highlights just how important open-source and open-weight AI models have become.

But why is Nvidia willing to spend nearly $13 billion on a platform that doesn’t manufacture chips?

The answer lies in control of the AI ecosystem.

Why Hugging Face Matters

Hugging Face has become a central destination for AI developers, researchers and companies.

The platform allows users to discover, share, evaluate, customize and deploy AI models and datasets. According to Nvidia, more than 18 million developers, researchers and creators use Hugging Face, which hosts more than 3 million models, 500,000 datasets and 1 million applications.

More than 200,000 companies also use the platform.

That makes Hugging Face much more than a model repository. It has effectively become a major layer of infrastructure for the open AI community.

And Nvidia now wants that ecosystem under its roof.

Nvidia’s Bigger AI Strategy

Nvidia already dominates the hardware powering modern AI. Its GPUs are used to train and run many of the world’s most advanced models.

However, the AI industry is gradually expanding beyond massive model training.

Companies increasingly need to deploy, customize and run AI models efficiently, particularly as open-weight models become more capable.

Hugging Face gives Nvidia a direct connection to the developers building those systems.

Reuters described the acquisition as a strategic move that could help Nvidia diversify beyond chip sales while strengthening its position across the broader AI infrastructure market.

In other words, Nvidia isn’t just selling the computers that run AI anymore. It wants to be closer to the software, models and developers using those computers.

Hugging Face Will Remain Open

One of the biggest concerns surrounding the acquisition is what Nvidia ownership means for Hugging Face’s open ecosystem.

Nvidia says the platform will remain open and hardware-neutral.

According to CEO Jensen Huang, developers will continue to choose the models, frameworks, cloud providers, inference services and computing platforms they want. Nvidia also says its own computing hardware will not be required to build or deploy through Hugging Face.

Hugging Face will also continue supporting open-source and open-weight models from different model developers.

That’s an important promise because Hugging Face’s appeal comes partly from its neutrality.

If developers believe Nvidia could prioritize its own hardware or models, the company could risk weakening the very ecosystem it is acquiring.

A Huge Jump in Valuation

The price is another reason this deal is attracting attention.

Hugging Face was valued at around $4.5 billion in 2023. Nvidia’s agreement values the company at nearly three times that figure only a few years later.

Nvidia says approximately $11.9 billion will go to Hugging Face shareholders, while another $1 billion in stock-based incentives will be used for employee retention.

The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals and other conditions.

Why Open AI Models Are So Important

The AI industry is currently divided between proprietary models controlled by companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic and increasingly powerful open-weight models that developers can download, customize and deploy themselves.

Nvidia clearly sees the latter becoming increasingly important.

The company says it has already contributed more than 500 models and 250 open datasets to Hugging Face and considers itself the platform’s largest contributor of open models and data.

Owning Hugging Face could therefore accelerate Nvidia’s existing open-model strategy.

It could also help the company build stronger tools for model evaluation, inference and deployment.

What This Means for Developers

For developers, the acquisition could ultimately bring more infrastructure and resources to Hugging Face.

Nvidia says its engineering capabilities and global reach can help improve the platform’s reliability, safety, model evaluation, inference and deployment capabilities.

But developers will be watching one thing above everything else: whether Hugging Face remains genuinely hardware-neutral.

If Nvidia keeps its promise, the deal could provide the open AI ecosystem with significantly more resources.

If that neutrality changes, developers may begin searching for alternatives.

Nvidia’s $12.9 Billion AI Bet

The Hugging Face acquisition is ultimately about much more than a website hosting AI models.

Nvidia is betting that the future of AI won’t be controlled solely by a handful of proprietary model providers. Open models, developers and AI applications could become just as important—and Nvidia wants a central role in that future.

The company already provides much of the hardware powering AI.

Now, with Hugging Face, it is moving deeper into the software and developer ecosystem surrounding AI.

The $12.9 billion question is whether Nvidia can expand that ecosystem without compromising the openness that made Hugging Face so valuable in the first place.
