The feature was briefly mentioned during Apple’s WWDC 2026 presentation, but Apple didn’t initially explain how it would work. A recent demonstration using Apple’s Xcode 27 development environment has now revealed more details.

One Phone Number, Two iPhones

iPhone Handoff lets you pair two iPhones and designate one as the main iPhone and the other as a companion iPhone.

The main device keeps your existing eSIM, while the companion iPhone receives a companion eSIM associated with the same phone number. This means you can switch the number between the two phones without manually transferring your cellular plan every time.

The important part is that this isn’t simply traditional Dual SIM. Both iPhones aren’t independently using the number simultaneously. Instead, your phone number becomes active on whichever paired iPhone you’re using.

No More Repeated eSIM Transfers

Currently, moving a number from one iPhone to another can require an eSIM transfer or carrier activation process. Apple’s existing eSIM Quick Transfer, for example, moves the number to the new iPhone and stops it from working on the previous device.

iPhone Handoff takes a different approach.

Once the companion device has been configured, the number can move between the two paired iPhones. Reports from the feature’s current implementation indicate that unlocking the iPhone you want to use can trigger the handoff.

That could make switching phones dramatically easier.

How the Companion eSIM Works

The technical trick behind iPhone Handoff is the companion eSIM.

Your primary eSIM remains on the main iPhone, while Apple and the carrier provision a second eSIM for the companion device. Both profiles are linked to the same phone number, but only one iPhone is the active endpoint at a time.

This means you’re not physically moving your SIM or repeatedly downloading a new eSIM profile.

Instead, the system handles the transition between the two devices.

Apple also keeps cellular management centralized on the main iPhone. Location sharing is reportedly designed to follow whichever iPhone is currently active with the shared number.

Why Would Anyone Need Two iPhones?

For most people, carrying two smartphones isn’t necessary. But there are plenty of situations where the feature could make sense.

You might have a powerful flagship iPhone that you normally carry but prefer a smaller phone when travelling. You could also keep a secondary iPhone for outdoor activities, workouts or situations where you don’t want to risk carrying your expensive primary device.

Instead of maintaining two phone numbers, you could potentially keep both devices connected to the same number and switch between them when needed.

That’s where iPhone Handoff becomes particularly interesting.

Carrier Support Is the Big Catch

There’s one major limitation: your carrier needs to support iPhone Handoff.

Both iPhones running iOS 27 won’t automatically guarantee that the feature works. The carrier needs to support the companion-eSIM provisioning required by Apple’s system. Current reports have pointed to T-Mobile in the US and Deutsche Telekom in Germany as potential early supporters, although Apple’s full carrier rollout has not been announced.

For users in India, this means availability will depend on whether local carriers eventually enable the feature.
