CMF’s First Bluetooth Speakers Look Like Milk Cartons — but They’re IP68-Rated
Nothing’s CMF brand has entered the portable Bluetooth speaker market with two products that look unlike most speakers on the market. The new CMF Speaker S and CMF Speaker M use a milk-carton-inspired design, physical controls and removable panels, while offering IP68-rated dust and water resistance.
The two speakers are designed for different listening needs. The smaller Speaker S focuses on portability, while the larger Speaker M uses a two-driver system with a combined 35W RMS output.
Both models also support Bluetooth 6.0, USB-C audio playback and multi-speaker listening features. Here’s what makes CMF’s first speakers worth a closer look.
1. A Milk-Carton Design That Stands Out
The first thing people are likely to notice is the shape. Instead of following the familiar cylindrical or rounded design used by many portable speakers, CMF has taken inspiration from the sharp geometry of a milk carton.
The design also includes removable panels for customisation and a physical control knob. The Speaker S has a carabiner-style utility hook, making it easier to attach to a bag, while the larger Speaker M includes a built-in handle.
Both speakers are available in White, Dark Grey, Orange and Turquoise. Their distinctive shapes and colour options give them a more playful appearance than conventional portable audio products.
The removable panels are particularly interesting because they allow some personalisation without changing the speaker itself. However, buyers should check which replacement panels or customisation options are available in their market before purchasing accessories.
2. CMF Speaker S vs Speaker M: What’s the Difference?
The two models differ considerably in size and audio hardware.
The CMF Speaker S uses a 45mm full-range driver rated at 10W RMS. Two passive radiators help reinforce low-frequency output. It is the more compact option, weighing approximately 334g.
The CMF Speaker M is the more powerful model. It combines a 70mm woofer rated at 25W RMS with a 16mm tweeter rated at 10W RMS, giving it a total output of 35W RMS.
The separate woofer and tweeter handle different parts of the audio range. This design is intended to deliver deeper bass and better separation between vocals and instruments, although real-world sound quality will depend on listening conditions and personal preference.
| Specification | CMF Speaker S | CMF Speaker M |
|---|---|---|
| Audio output | 10W RMS | 35W RMS total |
| Drivers | 45mm full-range | 70mm woofer + 16mm tweeter |
| Frequency range | 70Hz–20kHz | 60Hz–20kHz |
| Battery capacity | 2,600mAh | 4,900mAh |
| Weight | 334g | 602g |
| Carrying feature | Utility hook | Built-in handle |
The Speaker S looks better suited to people who want something lightweight for everyday travel. The Speaker M is the more suitable option on paper for listeners who want greater output and a larger speaker.
3. IP68 Protection Is a Major Highlight
A colourful design would mean little if the speakers were difficult to use outdoors. CMF has given both models an IP68 dust and water resistance rating.
According to the official product information, the speakers were tested under controlled laboratory conditions, including immersion in fresh water at a depth of up to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes.
That rating can provide additional peace of mind when using the speakers around dust or accidental splashes. However, it should not be interpreted as a guarantee that the products are indestructible or safe to use in every wet environment.
CMF warns that dust and water resistance can decrease with normal wear, damage or disassembly. Avoid deliberately immersing the speakers or exposing them to conditions beyond their specified test parameters.
4. Up to 18 Hours of Battery Life
Both speakers are advertised with up to 18 hours of playback on a full charge. That could make either model useful for a day out, travel or background music at home without frequent charging.
The battery capacities are different. The Speaker S has a 2,600mAh battery, while the Speaker M has a larger 4,900mAh battery.
CMF also claims that a 10-minute charge can provide up to one hour of playback under its stated testing conditions. The Speaker S takes approximately 2.5 hours to charge fully, while the Speaker M takes around three hours.
These figures are laboratory-based claims, not guaranteed results for every user. Volume, audio content, wireless conditions and enabled features can all affect battery life and charging performance.
5. Bluetooth 6.0, USB-C Audio and Multi-Speaker Playback
The speakers support Bluetooth 6.0 and can maintain connections with two audio sources at the same time. Compatible phones and computers can also use supported fast-pairing features.
For listeners who prefer a wired connection, both models support audio playback through USB-C. CMF says this connection can deliver low-latency audio, which may be useful when watching videos or playing games on a compatible device.
There are also two multi-speaker options:
- Stereo Mode: Pair two identical Speaker S units or two identical Speaker M units to create left- and right-channel playback.
- Party Mode: Use Auracast to connect compatible speakers and expand audio coverage.
The Nothing X app provides additional sound controls, including EQ presets, Custom EQ, Ultra Bass, Wide Soundstage and Night Mode. These features give users more ways to adjust playback to their preferences.
CMF Speaker S and Speaker M: Price and Availability
The announced US prices are:
- CMF Speaker S: $59
- CMF Speaker M: $109
Both models are listed on Nothing’s official websites. However, the US prices should not be treated as confirmed Indian prices.
At the time of writing, an official India-specific retail price and sale date have not been confirmed in the available launch information. Buyers in India should check CMF’s official India website for local pricing and availability rather than relying on direct currency conversions.
Should You Consider CMF’s First Speakers?
The CMF Speaker S and Speaker M stand out because they combine a distinctive design with practical features, including IP68-rated protection, Bluetooth 6.0 and claimed battery life of up to 18 hours.
The Speaker S is the more portable choice, with a lower weight and a useful carrying hook. The Speaker M offers a more powerful two-driver setup and a larger battery, making it the more appealing option for listeners who want a bigger portable speaker.
Their actual value will depend on local pricing and real-world audio performance. Until those factors can be assessed, the specifications make the two speakers interesting newcomers rather than automatic recommendations.
Conclusion
CMF’s first Bluetooth speakers make a strong first impression with their milk-carton-inspired design, customisable panels and IP68 rating. The Speaker S prioritises portability, while the Speaker M offers more audio output and a larger battery.
Their unusual design may attract attention, but sound quality, local pricing and real-world battery performance will ultimately determine how well they compete with established portable speakers.
