Qualcomm is preparing its next generation of flagship smartphone processors, and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series could bring one of the biggest changes to the company’s mobile chip lineup in years.

Qualcomm has officially scheduled its Snapdragon Summit 2026 for September 22–24, where the company is expected to reveal its next flagship Snapdragon platforms. Qualcomm has not yet officially confirmed the names or specifications, but recent leaks and Qualcomm’s own teaser point strongly toward two new high-end Snapdragon 8 Elite chips.

Two Snapdragon 8 Elite Chips Are Expected

The biggest change this year could be the introduction of two flagship variants: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and a more powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro.

Reports based on leaks identify the alleged chips as SM8950 for the standard Gen 6 and SM8975 for the Pro version. Both are reportedly built around Qualcomm’s next-generation Oryon CPU architecture, but the Pro model is expected to offer more powerful graphics and faster memory support.

Qualcomm itself recently teased two new Snapdragon chips ahead of Snapdragon Summit, describing them as part of the company’s next chapter in its agentic-AI push. The teaser also highlighted connectivity, GPU performance and immersive gaming.

2nm Could Be the Biggest Upgrade

One of the most significant reported changes is the move to TSMC’s 2nm manufacturing process.

Both the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Gen 6 Pro have been tipped to use the newer process, although Qualcomm has not yet confirmed this. Moving from the 3nm process used by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 to 2nm could potentially improve performance and power efficiency.

The smaller manufacturing process could be particularly important for smartphones because flagship chips increasingly have to handle demanding gaming, AI processing and camera workloads without consuming excessive power.

New Oryon CPU Architecture

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 family is expected to continue Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU strategy.

The difference could make the Pro version particularly attractive for flagship gaming phones and devices with high-resolution, high-refresh-rate displays.

LPDDR6 RAM Could Be Exclusive to the Pro

Memory support may also separate the two chips.

Reports suggest the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro could support LPDDR6 as well as LPDDR5X, while the standard Gen 6 may remain limited to LPDDR5X.

If confirmed, this could give the Pro variant an advantage in memory-intensive workloads, including advanced AI applications and demanding games.

However, faster memory support does not automatically mean every phone using the chipset will deliver the same performance. RAM capacity, storage technology, cooling and software optimisation will also matter.

The first smartphones powered by the new processors are expected to arrive toward the end of 2026 and into early 2027.
