iPhone Price Hike in India: Why Prices Are Higher

August 13, 2026 5 Min Read
Updated on October 7, 2026

The iPhone price hike in India is no longer just a possibility. Apple’s latest India pricing shows that its newer iPhone lineup is significantly more expensive than the figures mentioned in earlier reports, with rising memory and storage costs emerging as a major factor behind the pressure on smartphone pricing.

Apple’s India store currently lists the iPhone 17 from ₹99,900, the iPhone 17e from ₹79,900, and the iPhone 16 from ₹89,900. Apple’s latest premium models are priced even higher, with the iPhone 18 Pro starting at ₹1,64,900 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max starting at ₹1,79,900.

Reuters reported in September that India experienced one of the steepest iPhone price increases globally, with the base iPhone 17 rising to ₹99,900, representing a 21% increase compared with the previous generation’s pricing.

So, what is driving the higher prices, and what does it mean for Indian buyers?

Why Are iPhone Prices Higher in India?

One of the biggest factors behind the current pricing pressure is the rising cost of memory and storage components.

The global memory market has been heavily influenced by demand from artificial intelligence infrastructure. Data centres require huge quantities of advanced memory, increasing competition for components such as DRAM and NAND storage.

Reuters reported that rising memory and storage chip costs, combined with supply shortages linked to strong AI-related demand, were major factors behind Apple’s higher iPhone pricing.

For smartphone manufacturers, higher component costs eventually create a difficult choice. Companies can absorb the additional expense, reduce margins or pass some of the increase to customers.

Apple appears to have used a combination of pricing changes and product-positioning decisions as costs increased across its hardware business.

Apple’s Current iPhone Prices in India

Apple’s current India lineup shows how much the pricing landscape has changed.

The iPhone 17 starts at ₹99,900, while the iPhone 17e starts at ₹79,900. The older iPhone 16 is listed from ₹89,900. Apple’s premium iPhone 18 Pro starts at ₹1,64,900, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at ₹1,79,900.

Apple has also introduced the iPhone Air, which starts at ₹1,49,900 in India, while the new foldable iPhone Duo starts at ₹2,99,900.

This means buyers now have to consider a considerably higher entry point, particularly when looking at the latest premium models.

How Much Has the iPhone Price Increased?

The size of the increase depends on the model.

Reuters reported that the Indian price of the base iPhone 17 increased by around 21%, while the price of the iPhone Air saw an increase of up to 41% compared with the corresponding pricing context reported for the previous lineup.

India’s pricing can also differ substantially from US pricing because of local taxes, import-related costs and Apple’s regional pricing strategy. Reuters noted that Indian buyers continue to face higher effective prices than consumers in the United States, despite India being an important iPhone manufacturing and assembly market.

This is why a global component-cost increase does not translate into exactly the same percentage increase in every country.

Are Memory Costs Really the Main Problem?

Memory is an important part of the story, but it should not be treated as the only reason for Apple’s pricing.

The current memory shortage is closely connected to the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure. Major technology companies and data-centre operators are buying large quantities of high-performance memory, placing pressure on the broader memory supply chain.

Recent industry reporting continues to show strong memory-price pressure, with conventional DRAM prices expected to rise further as manufacturers balance strong AI-related demand with supply constraints.

Analysts have also warned that higher memory costs could continue affecting smartphone manufacturers during 2026.

For Apple, the impact can become especially important because newer iPhones increasingly depend on higher storage capacities and memory-intensive features.

    Could iPhone Prices Rise Again?

Another price increase cannot be ruled out, but future pricing should be treated separately from confirmed prices.

Analysts have previously predicted that future iPhone 18 Pro pricing could rise substantially because of increasing memory and advanced silicon costs. One IDC estimate suggested the Pro models could see an increase of as much as $200, while another analyst later suggested a potential increase of $250 to $300. These are analyst forecasts, not Apple’s official pricing guidance.

Apple has already launched the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, with the India store currently listing the iPhone 18 Pro from ₹1,64,900.

That makes it important to distinguish between confirmed Apple prices and predictions about future products.

What Does the Price Hike Mean for Indian Buyers?

Higher iPhone prices make buying decisions more important, particularly for users who normally upgrade every one or two years.

For buyers on a tighter budget, an older-generation iPhone can become more attractive if Apple continues selling it at a lower price. For example, the iPhone 16 remains available through Apple’s India store, giving buyers another option below the latest premium models.

Buyers can also reduce the effective cost through Apple’s trade-in programme, financing options and eligible offers. Apple currently provides trade-in values and financing options through its India store.

However, buyers should compare the final price rather than focusing only on monthly EMI amounts.

Should You Buy an iPhone Now?

The answer depends on what you need.

If you need a new iPhone now, there is little reason to delay a purchase purely because of rumours. Current prices are already confirmed, so you can compare the official Apple price with authorised retailers, exchange offers and bank discounts.

On the other hand, buyers who do not urgently need an upgrade may benefit from waiting for discounts on older models rather than automatically choosing the newest and most expensive iPhone.

The important point is that waiting is no longer a strategy for avoiding a confirmed price increase that has not happened. The market has already moved to higher pricing for Apple’s latest generation.

    Final Verdict

The iPhone price hike in India is now a confirmed part of Apple’s current pricing landscape, rather than simply a prediction.

Rising memory and storage costs, supply pressure and strong AI-related demand are important factors behind the broader hardware-cost environment, while India’s taxes and regional pricing structure also affect the final amount buyers pay.

For consumers, the best approach is to focus on the actual price of the model they want, compare trade-in and retailer offers, and avoid making a purchase based solely on unconfirmed rumours.

Apple’s official India store remains the most reliable place to check the latest iPhone prices.
