Apple iPad mini 2026: OLED Display, A19 Pro or A20 Pro and More

September 28, 2026 6 Min Read

OLED iPad mini 2026

Apple’s next iPad mini 2026 is shaping up to be a significant update to the company’s smallest tablet. The biggest expected change is an OLED display, replacing the LCD panel used by the current iPad mini.

The next model is also expected to receive a newer Apple silicon chip. Earlier reports pointed to the A19 Pro, while a newer leak based on Apple-related code points to the A20 Pro. That means the processor remains one of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding the tablet.

Launch timing is also becoming clearer, but it is not confirmed. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously reported that the new OLED iPad mini should go on sale by the end of October 2026. More recent reporting has widened the possibility to late 2026 or early 2027.

Here is everything currently reported about the next iPad mini.

OLED Display Could Be the Biggest Upgrade

The headline change is expected to be the move from LCD to OLED.

The current iPad mini uses an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display with IPS technology, 2266 × 1488 resolution, 326ppi and 500-nit brightness. It also supports P3 wide color, True Tone and Apple Pencil Pro.

OLED works differently from LCD because individual pixels can produce their own light. This allows OLED panels to produce deeper blacks and stronger contrast without relying on a separate backlight.

For the iPad mini, that could make movies, photos, games and other visually rich content look noticeably different from the current LCD model.

Reports also suggest Apple could slightly increase the usable display area, with some sources pointing to an 8.5-inch or 8.7-inch panel. However, the exact screen size has not been confirmed.

Will the OLED iPad mini Get 120Hz ProMotion?

This remains uncertain.

Some reports have speculated about a higher refresh rate, but other reporting expects the OLED iPad mini to remain at 60Hz rather than adopting the 120Hz ProMotion technology found on the iPad Pro. There is currently no official confirmation from Apple either way.

For SEO and accuracy, this is an important distinction: OLED is widely reported; 120Hz is not confirmed.

A19 Pro or A20 Pro: Which Chip Will Apple Use?

The processor is currently one of the most interesting parts of the iPad mini 2026 rumors.

The existing iPad mini uses the A17 Pro. Apple introduced that model in October 2024 with Apple Intelligence support, an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display and Apple Pencil Pro compatibility.

Earlier reports suggested that Apple was preparing the next iPad mini with an A19 Pro chip. MacRumors previously reported evidence pointing toward an A19 Pro-powered model.

However, a newer report published on September 25 says Apple’s code appears to point toward an A20 Pro chip instead. MacRumors says the leak also reveals information about the next iPad mini’s front-camera arrangement and speaker design.

So, at this stage:

FeatureCurrent iPad miniiPad mini 2026 reports
Display8.3-inch LCDOLED expected
ChipA17 ProA19 Pro or A20 Pro
Refresh rate60Hz60Hz reported, not confirmed
Apple IntelligenceYesExpected
Water resistanceNo official IP ratingReported
Speaker designConventional speakersVibration-based system reported

The important point is that Apple has not confirmed the chip yet.

New iPad mini Could Get Better Water Resistance

Another reported change is a redesigned casing aimed at improving water resistance.

Bloomberg’s reporting has suggested that Apple is developing a new speaker system based on vibration technology. Instead of relying entirely on conventional speaker openings, the approach could help Apple create a more sealed enclosure.

The current iPad mini does not have an official IP water-resistance rating listed in Apple’s specifications.

If the reports are accurate, improved resistance would be a meaningful durability upgrade for a small tablet that is often carried around in bags and used in different environments.

Landscape Front Camera Could Be Coming

The latest leaked-code report adds another potential design change.

According to MacRumors, images found in Apple’s code show the front-facing camera positioned along the landscape edge of the display. This would make the next iPad mini the final iPad model to transition to this orientation, if the leak is accurate.

That positioning would make more sense for video calls when the iPad mini is used horizontally.

However, because Apple has not announced the device, this remains a reported design change rather than an official specification.

When Will the OLED iPad mini Launch?

This is where the reporting has shifted slightly.

In August, 9to5Mac reported on Mark Gurman’s claim that the new OLED iPad mini should go on sale by the end of October.

That made a late-October release one of the strongest reported windows for the device.

More recent reporting, however, has introduced some uncertainty. Macworld’s latest roundup says the iPad mini could arrive in late 2026 or early 2027, while also noting that earlier reporting had specifically pointed to October.

As of September 26, 2026, Apple has not announced an official launch date.

That means a late-October launch remains a reported possibility, not a confirmed Apple event date.

What About the iPad mini 2026 Price?

Apple’s current iPad mini starts at $599 in the US, following a price increase earlier in 2026, according to current reporting.

The next OLED model could cost more because OLED panels generally cost more than comparable LCD panels, but Apple has not announced the price.

Therefore, TDN should not publish a specific iPad mini 2026 launch price as fact until Apple confirms it.

iPad mini 2026: Expected Specifications

Based on the current reporting, here’s the safest snapshot:

  • Display: OLED expected
  • Display size: Around 8.3 inches; 8.5–8.7 inches has also been reported
  • Refresh rate: 60Hz reported by some sources; not officially confirmed
  • Processor: A19 Pro or A20 Pro
  • Current model: A17 Pro
  • Front camera: Landscape-oriented camera reported
  • Water resistance: Improved resistance reported
  • Speaker: Vibration-based speaker system reported
  • Apple Intelligence: Expected
  • Launch: Late October 2026 reported by Gurman; late 2026/early 2027 remains possible
  • Price: Not confirmed

Why the OLED Upgrade Matters

The iPad mini has remained relatively compact while the rest of Apple’s iPad lineup has gradually moved toward newer display and processor technologies.

The current model was introduced in October 2024 with the A17 Pro and 8.3-inch LCD display.

Moving to OLED would therefore be more than a simple processor refresh. It could give the iPad mini a higher-end display experience while keeping its compact form factor.

The possible A19 Pro or A20 Pro upgrade would also give Apple additional performance headroom for demanding apps and on-device AI workloads.

OLED iPad mini 2026: What We Know So Far

The next iPad mini is widely expected to receive an OLED display, while the processor could be either the A19 Pro or A20 Pro. Recent leaked-code information has strengthened the A20 Pro possibility, but Apple has not confirmed the chip.

A redesigned speaker system, improved water resistance and a landscape-oriented front camera have also been reported.

As for the release date, late October 2026 is a significant reported window, but newer reporting leaves open the possibility of a later release. Apple has not announced an official date.

For now, the OLED display is the clearest expected upgrade, while the chip, final specifications, price and exact launch date remain unconfirmed.
